Tell us about the Black Advertising Strategic Communication Association (BASCA). BASCA is a student organization at Ohio State University focused on fostering networking opportunities, career development, and mentorship for students interested in marketing, advertising, and communication. The group hosts a variety of events such as industry panels, company tours, and workshops. Members attend networking visits to major organizations and companies in related fields, such as Spotify HQ, Edelman Communications and the Shipyard.
Why did you join BASCA? I joined BASCA to network and expand my knowledge of professional industries in marketing and communication. It provided a great platform to connect with professionals and like-minded students, helping me prepare for a career in the field.
What is your favorite memory of working with BASCA? My favorite memory is visiting the Cleveland Browns headquarters. I got to tour the facilities, meet and connect with a panel of high-level executives, and even interacted with some football players. It was an unforgettable experience that gave me a unique behind-the-scenes look at a professional sports organization.
What tips or suggestions do you have for students who are looking for the right club or organization to join at the Ohio State University? My advice would be to find a group that aligns with your career aspirations and personal interests. It’s also important to join an organization that offers opportunities for growth, networking, and real-world experiences. Clubs like BASCA can provide valuable industry exposure and mentorship, which can be incredibly beneficial.
How do new people get involved with BASCA? New members can get involved by contacting Dr. Osei Appiah at appiah.2@osu.edu or visiting the BASCA website for updates on meetings and events.
