Tell us about Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE). APSE is a relatively new organization that aspires to help students interested in sports journalism learn more about the field and develop their skills. The organization holds a meeting once every two weeks and can allow members to gain advice, networking opportunities, and game coverage. So far, the organization has attended a Men’s soccer game which allowed members to be able to experience real game coverage.

Why did you join APSE? I joined APSE to take advantage of an opportunity to learn more about the field of sports journalism. As someone interested in potentially working in the sports journalism field, I figured this would help me learn as much as possible and develop my skills.

What is your favorite memory of working with APSE? Attending a Men’s soccer game and experiencing what writing a game looks like has been my favorite memory of working with APSE. This experience helped me gain an understanding of what a writer covering a game goes through.

What tips or suggestions do you have for students who are looking for the right club or organization to join at the Ohio State University? I would suggest joining as many organizations or clubs as possible. In doing so, you can gain a greater understanding of that specific club and determine if it is something that you are interested in.

How do new people get involved with APSE? I joined APSE through the Sports Involvement Fair hosted by Ohio State’s Sports and Society Initiative, which was held at the start of September. Members of other sports-related clubs at Ohio State will often get sent messages about the opportunities that APSE has, which allows new people to get involved. APSE is a relatively new organization, but it provides a great amount of opportunities to learn more about sports journalism.

Tell us about Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE). APSE at Ohio State aims to be a resource for students who are wanting to break into the sports media scope. We offer mentorship for students from the professional organization, as well as scholarship opportunities, networking with professionals in the field, and information on how to be a better sports communicator. This club can benefit students because the sports field is a lot about who you know, and making connections through this student org can help with that! It’s also nice to hear from upperclassman students who’ve done the internships and taken some of Ohio State’s classes that have to do with athletics. We attend athletic events at Ohio State as a group to work on sports writing, talking with coaches/players and working with media relations professionals. We also meet bi-weekly in 281 Journalism!

Why did you join APSE? I joined APSE to meet other journalists/sports-driven students at Ohio State and to learn a bit more about the sports media field itself.

What is your favorite memory of working with APSE? We’re a pretty new club (Fall 2024 is our first full semester) so we haven’t had the chance to have many events yet, but I’m looking forward to making new memories with our group this year!

What tips or suggestions do you have for students who are looking for the right club or organization to join at the Ohio State University? Try everything! Ohio State has something for everyone, no matter how niche your interests. Branch out, and don’t be afraid to leave your comfort zone!

How do new people get involved with APSE? Anyone interested can shoot me an email riley.890@osu.edu. I’ll add you to the Slack channel, where we post announcements, resources, internships and events!
