Research shows how biology helps form communication theories
Professor Rob Potter was published in Annals of the International Communication Association for research on the history of using biological measures to develop theories about media communication. His paper, “Four decades of biological measurement advancing mediated communication theory: a review of literature from 1980–2020,” examines how tools like EEG, fMRI and eye tracking have helped researchers understand key ideas in communication, such as why people get used to violent content, why they choose certain media and what makes messaging effective. The paper reviews 135 research studies published between 1980 and 2020.
