Undergrad Student Presents Interdisciplinary Research at Denman Undergraduate Research Forum
Clare Bowen-Kunkler, a fourth year undergraduate student, presented her honors thesis at the Denman Undergraduate Research Forum this spring, showcasing research into the persistent stereotypes and misrepresentations of Appalachia often perpetuated in the media.
Bowen-Kunkler is a Strategic Communication major with a minor in Women, Gender and Sexuality studies and is graduating from Ohio State’s Honors Program with Research Distinction. She is a first-generation college student.
Her thesis, “The Mountains Remember Her Name: Oral Histories of Womanhood in Appalachian-Ohio,” explores the lived experiences of women in Appalachian Ohio using oral history methods. The research examines themes such as identity, marginalization, resilience and the need for greater access to resources and agency within these communities.
“As someone from the region, I was motivated to challenge the persistent stereotypes and misrepresentations of Appalachia often perpetuated in the media,” Bowen-Kunkler said.
The project reflects an interdisciplinary approach, combining strategic communication with women, gender, and sexuality studies. Her background in communication informed a focus on audience-centered storytelling and ethical representation, particularly when working with underrepresented communities.
Her research was supported by the Global Arts and Humanities Undergraduate Fellowship through University Libraries and funding from The Women’s Place. These programs provide resources for undergraduate students to pursue independent research projects.
Bowen-Kunkler worked with faculty across departments, including guidance from Professor Osei Appiah and Associate Professor Lanier Holt in the School of Communication.
This spring, Bowen-Kunkler also received the Bohem Holistic Wellness Life Leadership Award from the university’s Office of Student Life, recognizing her involvement and leadership on campus.
In addition to her academic work, Bowen-Kunkler completed a 2023 internship at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, where she gained experience in public-facing communication and content development.
