Pacific Standard Cites Clementson Research on Presidential Campaign Language

PhD Student David Clementson

A Pacific Standard article, "You Tell ‘em, Trump!,"  cited research by PhD student David Clementson showing the impact of presidential campaign language. His research shows that the type of language political candidates use to be viewed as presidential varies from year to year and from person to person. In a study to be published later this year in President Studies Quarterly, Clementson shows that the public looks favorably at presidential candidates who use restrained language when the economic situation looks bright. But when viewers are fearful about the future, there is an expectation that candidates reflect this emotional turmoil to appear trustworthy.
