Kraft Publishes Sportswriting Textbook ‘Storytelling Beyond the Scoreboard’

Nicole Kraft

Professor of Practice Nicole Kraft and Ohio State alum Jean-Jacques Taylor  published a new textbook exploring the skills and storytelling techniques behind sports journalism.

Storytelling Beyond the Scoreboard: The Art and Craft of Sports Journalism” provides aspiring and professional sports journalists with practical guidance on reporting, interviewing, storytelling and navigating the changing sports media landscape. The book also addresses topics including social media, AI, ethics and bias in sports journalism. It explores how journalists can build relationships with athletes, coaches and other sources while telling stories about the communities and larger issues connected to sports.

Kraft has more than 40 years of experience as a reporter, editor and magazine journalist and worked in professional sports public relations before joining Ohio State in 2010. She currently teaches writing and sports reporting courses and serves as director of Ohio State’s Sports and Society Institute. She is an award-winning sports writer who currently covers the Columbus Blue Jackets for the Associated Press, sports media for Forbes.com and horseracing for the Columbus Dispatch.  Kraft was honored in 2023 as the Scripps-Howard Teacher of the Year.

Taylor has covered the Dallas Cowboys as a print and TV reporter and a radio personality in Dallas-Fort Worth since 1995.
