Journalism alum, “My Friend Dahmer” author reflects on success

John "Derf" Backderf
School of Communication alumnus John “Derf” Backderf (BA, Journalism, 1983) created “My Friend Dahmer,” a graphic novel that explores Backderf’s high school acquaintance with serial killer Jeffery Dahmer. Backderf did not predict the success of the novel, which was selected by Time Magazine as one of the best nonfiction books of 2012, as well as the 2017 film adaptation.

Backderf credits Ohio State, and especially his time at The Lantern, with having a potent influence on both his personal and professional path.
