School of Communication Director Kelly Garrett participated in the Columbus Metropolitan Club panel “Real News, Fake News, and How Journalism Can Save Democracy” on Aug. 21.

The Columbus Metropolitan Club hosted a panel of four speakers focusing on the vital role of journalism in maintaining a healthy democracy. The panel explored challenges that the journalism industry is facing, particularly with the decline of local news outlets and rise of online and social media as primary news sources, often full of misinformation.

The discussion centered on the crucial role that journalists play in preserving democracy, engaging polarized audiences and the importance of media literacy in fostering active citizenship.
