Garrett Disputes the Interpretation of a New Study

Kelly Garrett

Associate Professor Kelly Garrett was recently featured in a Mashable article discussing the findings of a new study that suggest political views can influence the type of science book you choose to read.

The study's authors believe that this is another example of an "echo chamber" or "information bubble," we experience on Facebook or other online platforms when opposing views are silenced. Garrett, however, disagrees with framing the results as further proof of information bias. He believes showing that liberals prefer books on basic sciences, or that conservatives tend to choose applied sciences books, does not mean consumers are willfully ignoring diverse viewpoints.

"It's a really interesting study, but I don't like framing this as an echo chamber or a filter bubble," Garrett said. "That's premature."
