Erik Nisbet on Turkey Referendum, Georgia Election Ad and March for Science

Erik Nisbet

Recently, Erik Nisbet, associate professor with the School of Communication and Mershon Center for International Security Studies, has been featured in various news mediums discussing political issues.

First, he was a correspondent on The Heat: The Referendum in Turkey. Turkey held a constiututional referendum on replacing its parliamentary system with a presidential one and before the referendum, Nisbet voiced his opinion on the referendum and Turkey moving forward.

"Basically, the referendum as it stands, the constitutional changes that are proposed, they most likely will lead to a deterioration of the democracy in Turkey," Nisbet said.

A second piece Nisbet was quoted in is an article in the Columbia Journalism Review about a misleading ad that was used in the recent Georgia election. The ad takes a quote out of context to point out that Jon Ossoff, the 30-year-old Democratic candidate who attempted to turn the district blue for the first time in 40 years, oversees a documentary film company that has worked for Al Jazeera.

"You have two boogeymen," Nisbet said. "You have a twofer -- the media who 'can't be trusted,' and Muslims."

Nisbet was also featured on All Sides with Ann Fisher on April 20, discussing the March for Science and the hot topics concerning science and politics.
