Bushman Calls for Overhaul of TV Ratings

Brad Bushman

Professor and researcher Brad Bushman is advocating for a change in U.S. media ratings to better inform parents and protect children.

Bushman and his colleague Dan Romer, research director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania, have been contacted by the Federal Communications Commission as it reviews TV media ratings for effectiveness and accuracy.

"We should scrap the rating systems we currently have for all media in the United States," Bushman said.

One of the biggest problems, Bushman said, is that media ratings in the U.S. are assigned by the industry, not child development experts.
