Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

Covering Race: Brainstorming Approaches to Improve Journalism and Society

News Innovation through Communication Science (NICS) Colloquium

Many studies have shown that the nature of news – especially local television news – coverage can unintentionally misrepresent the roles played by minorities in society. Examples of inaccurate coverage include the proportion of Blacks, Hispanics and Whites as crime victims, crime suspects, and law enforcement officials as well as the race or ethnicity of immigrants. This coverage has been shown to have deleterious effects on public perceptions and policy support. What role do the norms and practices of news reporting play in this inaccurate coverage? How can journalists and editors make changes to improve this aspect of news coverage?

Lantern writers and editors, SPJ members, and other students interested in journalism and communication are especially invited to attend.

The purpose of the News Innovation through Communication Science (NICS) Colloquium is to facilitate a conversation between journalists and scholars about how to improve journalism – and thus democracy and society – through understanding the scientific research in communication on the challenges journalism faces. Our hope is that the result of these conversations will be innovative journalistic approaches applied via The Lantern as a laboratory to improve upon the current state of journalism at Ohio State and beyond. We encourage input on future topics to cover.
