Student Research on Societal Changes Resulting from Paris Attacks Receives Funding

Massarah Mikati

A School of Communication student’s plan to study the societal changes wrought by the Nov. 13 Paris terror attacks won the support of a research scholarship and an international research grant from the College of Arts and Sciences.

Massarah Mikati, a third-year student majoring in Journalism, Middle East Studies and Francophone studies, will receive $11,000 to help cover costs as she conducts research for her honors thesis in France during the autumn semester.

“I’m very excited for the opportunity,” Mikati said. “This is really one of my passions – to explore this environment and this atmosphere in France.”

Her studies are focused on how the lives and social identities of French-Maghreb Muslims changed after Nov. 13, when Islamic State gunmen and suicide bombers killed 130 people and wounded hundreds.

“France is expensive. I’m going to have to do a lot of traveling and talk to a lot of people,” Mikati said. “It will really help me to not have to worry too much about budgeting and to focus on getting the best-quality research.”
