Ohio State Faculty, Students Featured at NCA Convention
The National Communication Association held its 110th Annual Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana Nov. 21-24. Over 20 Ohio State School of Communication faculty and graduate students participated as paper authors, presenters, respondents and session chairs.
Assistant Professor Teresa Lynch was recognized as the recipient of the 2024 inaugural award for Outstanding Contributions to Promoting Equity and Inclusion. This award recognizes a division member who has clearly demonstrated excellence in promoting inclusion, diversity, equity and access (IDEA) in the area of communication and social cognition through their research, teaching and service.
Four of the research papers presented received Top Paper Awards:
Associate Professor Hillary Shulman, PhD students Kara Fort and Jorge Cruz Ibarra, and former students Rachel Lopez and Elizabeth Riggs received a Top Paper Award in the Communication & Social Cognition Division for their paper, "The impacts of code-mixing in a cross-cultural narrative: How processing fluency impacts narrative engagement and racial attitudes."
Associate Professor Hillary Shulman, along with Associate Professors Jason Coronel and Rob Bond and former students Matthew Sweitzer and Olivia Bullock won the Michael Pfau Outstanding Article Award in the Political Communication Division for their article titled "Predicting vote choice and election outcomes from ballot wording: The role of processing fluency in low information direct democracy elections." The article was published in 2022 in the journal entitled Political Communication.
Associate Professor Matt Grizzard, Professor Emily Moyer-Gusé and alum Rebecca Frazer received a Top Paper Award in the Mass Communication Division for their article titled “The Role of Character Depth in Affective Disposition Processes: An Experimental Study.”
Assistant Professor Sarah Grady received a Top Paper Award in the Mass Communication Division for her article titled “How Does Narrative Content Influence Enjoyment Versus Appreciation? Applying Berlyne’s Curves to Understand How the Dimensions of Narrative Challenge Should Impact Appraisals.”
