Jay Smith, systems manager for the School of Communication, received the Arts and Sciences Staff Excellence Award for October.

Smith provides IT support, fixes computer issues and supports research labs and classrooms. He was chosen for the award, in part, for being present, listening to people's problems and coming up with creative solutions. Smith said he also likes to have fun at work.

"It’s a big honor to be selected, and to be one of the first to receive this award from our new dean. Dr. Ritter was very personable and it was a wonderful surprise to have her stop by my office unexpectedly," said Smith.
