Holt Discusses New Supreme Court Decision on Almanac

Lanier Holt

Earlier this month, Associate Professor Lanier Holt was featured on Almanac, a news program produced by Twin Cities Public Television (TPT), talking about the Supreme Court's latest decision regarding the use of affirmative action in college admissions.

During the interview, Holt said that the current Supreme Court is actively preventing younger generations from experiencing the benefits of diverse exposure, which he referred to as "stagnation through legislation." He emphasized the historical significance of education for people of color in transcending socioeconomic disparities, emphasizing the importance of education as a pathway from being a "have-not" to a "have."

Holt pointed out that such decisions also have repercussions on economic diversity, citing the interconnection between race and economics. He concluded by mentioning that discontinuing legacy entrances to colleges would be unlikely, given that nepotism remains ingrained in workplaces and colleges, particularly in Ivy League institutions.
