Smartphones and social media have contributed to the rise of selfies, and not at a small cost. More than 250 people -- most under age 30 -- died while taking selfies between 2011 and 2017.

Professor and researcher Jesse Fox "recalled a road trip she took to national parks, where she witnessed so many people taking selfies, she began taking photos of the selfie-takers themselves."

Fox spoke on the danger of selfies but in terms of narcisissm. The New York Times cited Fox's 2019 study, which found that the number of selfies men posted could be predicted by their levels of narcissism and psychopathy.
