Campbell's research reveals positive, negative effects of solitude on mental health

Scott Campbell

Research from Professor Scott Campbell on how solitude affects well-being has received significant media coverage in prominent US news outlets and international publications, including US NewsScience DailyMedicalXpressABC.esGeo.de, and Today Headline

Campbell’s research examines how solitude, which refers to spending time alone, affects one's well-being. It explores the human experience of being alone in a peaceful setting to complete isolation and the impact of both.

The researchers concluded that solitude can have both beneficial and adverse effects on individuals. They found that solitude allows individuals to energize, enter a state of relaxation, and gain a sense of independence. However, solitude can be harmful when overused. Extreme and intense solitude, such as complete isolation, can result in a decline in one's mental and emotional health. The study proves that the degree of solitude is a critical factor. Ross and Campbell reveal the importance of maintaining balance between alone-time and social connection.
