I research narratives that depict interactions that may influence how stigmatized groups may be perceived by the broader public. I conceptualize stigma as negative beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors toward specific groups based on race, health status, sexual orientation, and social identities. In the context of health communication, my research focuses on health disparities perpetuated by stigma and poor intergroup relationships. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods I seek to understand what characteristics of narratives are most effective at promoting intergroup empathy.
