Summer Internship Series: Kyla Burkitt, Communications Intern, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio

As I write this, I’m realizing that I am over halfway finished with my internship, and while that’s kind of sad news, anyone who has talked with me about my experience at RMHC knows that I think it’s all that and a side of fries.

What I’ve Been Up To

One of the things I love most about interning at a nonprofit is that two days are rarely alike. Things are constantly changing, new projects need completing and you never quite know what to expect. As someone who thrives in dynamic work environments, I’ve loved getting the chance to tackle a different assignment almost every time I’ve come in. To kick off the summer, I worked on the communication plan for Team RMHC—our running and fundraising team for the Columbus Marathon. After the other interns and I developed the plan, it turned into one of my ongoing assignments. I reached out to members of Team RMHC and asked if they would be willing to share their reasons for choosing to run for Team RMHC. Many got back to me with really interesting stories about how the House had benefitted their friends, relatives and even themselves, so they were eager to jump on the chance to fundraise for and dedicate their race to RMHC. I then worked with one of my fellow interns to turn these stories into blog posts, one of which has already been posted onto RMHC of Central Ohio’s official blog.

Another project I had the chance to be a part of was the premiere screening of Minions, which RMHC hosted at the Studio Movie Grille Arena Grand. Two of the other interns came up with this amazing idea and then I got to help prep for it as well as be there for the premiere. At the premiere, I worked a table where we were raffling off two posters for the movie and having guests “autograph” a third poster as they walked by. It was incredible to be a part of this event, not just because I am a big fan of children’s movies, but also because I really invested myself in the project and got to see the event through from start to finish.

What’s Yet To Come

One of the projects I’m looking forward to working on is our Stories of Change campaign where we are gathering the stories of families and volunteers who have been impacted by RMHC. I think this campaign is going to be amazing to carry out, and I cannot wait to hear all those stories. Another assignment I’ve been working on is for cause marketing outreach. So far, I’ve only been researching businesses and comprising a list of potential partners, but I’m hopeful that I’ll get to see the results of the work I’ve done so far. I’m a little…salty…that my internship at the House is coming to a close, but I’m sure the time I have left will be even sweeter than those beloved Shamrock Shakes.
