BASCA in Washington, D.C.

The Black Advertising & Strategic Communication Association (BASCA) recently traveled to Washington, D.C. for a networking trip. Led by communication professor Dr. Osei Appiah, the group visited communications firms, met with Ohio State alumni and did some sightseeing.

BASCA visited the Washington, D.C branch of Edelman, the world’s largest communications firm.

“[There was a] panel full of people, even some Ohio State alum. [They were] open and willing to look at resumes and future openings that were coming up,” Tinae Bluitt, social chair of BASCA, said. “They offered a lot of help and were willing to exchange contact information.”

The group also toured the office of Levick, a leading public relations and strategic communications firm, and they were welcomed at the Coca-Cola Company’s Washington, D.C. headquarters to learn about in-house communications work.

“When we walked in, the person taking us around was an Ohio State alum who gave us our own personalized Coke bottles,” Bluitt said. “She put a lot of thought into us coming and answered all of our questions. We talked a lot about what she does and our Ohio State connection.”

United States Senator Sherrod Brown’s press secretary met with the group to discuss political communications. Bluitt called this “an eye-opener.”

“We got to learn a lot about this route we didn’t know we could take after college,” she said.

BASCA had additional opportunities to network with Ohio State alumni at a dinner, while touring Howard University and while visiting the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

“Since we are a majority African American organization, we all could relate to [the National Museum of African American History and Culture],” Bluitt said. “It was very powerful. Being in there had me speechless.”
